Lotus tetragonolobus L., commonly called asparagus-pea or winged pea, is an annual leguminous herb. It is native to countries surrounding the Mediterranean, and has been introduced to other regions. This plant grows low to the ground, and produces an abundance of noticeable deep red flowers. After flowering, it develops seed pods that have longitudinal wings. It is cultivated for its edible green seed pods, which are one of the vegetables that share the common names asparagus pea or winged pea.
