About Lomatia dentata (Ruiz & Pav.) R.Br.
Lomatia dentata is a small evergreen tree that grows to about 10 m (33 ft) tall. Its leaves grow alternately along branches, have short stalks, and are oval in shape. They narrow at the base, and have blunt teeth along the upper two-thirds of their edge. The upper leaf surface is glossy dark green, while the underside is pale green, with a very prominent midrib. Leaves range from 3 to 8 cm (1.2 to 3.1 in) long and 1 to 3 cm (0.4 to 1.2 in) wide. Flowers grow in small corymbs located in the leaf axils. The flowers are irregular in shape, and can be red or white; they have four tepals, four short stamens, and a long style that remains attached to the fruit. The fruits are woody, winged oblong follicles that narrow toward the base. Both ripe fruits and seeds are brown.
