About Lomandra hystrix (R.Br.) L.R.Fraser & Vickery
This species, Lomandra hystrix (R.Br.) L.R.Fraser & Vickery, produces leaves that are 80 cm to 100 cm in length, and approximately 10 mm to 20 mm in width. It grows alongside watercourses within upland and mountain rainforest. This plant is frequently used for revegetation projects and erosion control. The starchy, fleshy bases of its leaves are edible, and have a flavor similar to raw peas. Even when its roots are exposed, it will cling tenaciously even when growing in poor quality soils. This species is closely related to Lomandra longifolia. The inner bract and flowers of the two species are similar, but Lomandra hystrix differs from L. longifolia in the shape of its leaf apex, the absence of conspicuous marginal sclerenchyma bands on its leaves, and in the branching pattern of its inflorescence.
