About Lobelia gattingeri A.Gray

Lobelia gattingeri, commonly known as Gattinger's lobelia, is a species of flowering plant in the bellflower family. It is endemic to calcareous cedar glades and barrens, and has a small native range limited to middle Tennessee, northern Alabama, and one single site in Kentucky's Pennyroyal Plain. It is an annual species whose seeds germinate in either autumn or spring. It produces a spike of blue flowers in spring, and may remain in bloom until October during wet summers. This species is sometimes classified as a variety of Lobelia appendiculata, which occurs further south and west. Lobelia gattingeri can be distinguished from Lobelia appendiculata by its smaller overall size and more glabrous calyx.
