About Litocala sexsignata Harvey, 1875

Litocala is a monotypic moth genus that belongs to the family Erebidae. This genus contains only one species: Litocala sexsignata, commonly known as the litocala moth. The species is distributed in the United States, where it occurs in Washington, Montana, Utah and Colorado, ranging south to southern California; it also reaches northern Baja California in Mexico. Both the genus and the species were first described by Leon F. Harvey: the genus was described in 1878, and the species was described three years earlier, in 1875. This moth lives in habitats of oak woodlands and forests. The forewings of adult Litocala sexsignata measure 13–15 mm in length. Adults are active on the wing between March and June. Individuals have been observed sipping moisture at puddles, and have also been recorded feeding on nectar from willow catkins.
