About Liophloeus tessulatus (O.F.Müller, 1776)
Liophloeus tessulatus is a species of beetle in the weevil family Curculionidae. Adults of this species grow up to approximately 10 millimeters in length. The species was first formally described scientifically in 1776 by Otto Friedrich Müller, under the original name Curculio tessulatus. It has also been previously described and published under the synonym Liophloeus schmidti (Boheman, 1824). Adult Liophloeus tessulatus feed on a range of wild plants, which include Creeping Thistle, Cow Parsley, Hogweed, Ivy, and Colt's-foot. The larvae of this species develop on the roots of these host plants, and require two years to complete development into mature adults. At lower altitudes, populations of this species reproduce via parthenogenesis.
