About Licuala spinosa Wurmb

Licuala spinosa Wurmb, commonly known as mangrove fan palm, reaches heights between 2 and 7 meters (6.6 to 23.0 feet). Its trunk measures 4 to 7 centimeters in diameter, and the species may grow in clumps. It prefers full sun and abundant water, and is more cold hardy than most other Licuala species. In Cambodia, this palm is called pha'aw. Its leaves are used locally to make hats and wrap food. The plant's heart and terminal bud are prepared as a vegetable and appreciated by Cambodian people. In traditional Cambodian medicine, the root is included in compounds used both as a febrifuge and as a preparation to support foetal health, while the trunk bark is used to treat tuberculosis.
