About Libythea laius Trimen, 1879

Libythea laius, commonly known as the lobed beak, is a butterfly species that belongs to the subfamily Libytheinae. This species can be found in East Africa, Madagascar, southern India, and Sri Lanka. It was first formally described by Roland Trimen in 1879. Libythea laius was previously classified as a synonym of Libythea labdaca, a species that shares similar markings on the dorsal side of its wings. The two species differ in the status of the rectangular orange marking at the apex of the discal cell: this marking is either fused to the base of the discal cell or separated from it in Libythea laius.
