About Libellula pulchella Drury, 1773

The twelve-spotted skimmer, with the scientific name Libellula pulchella Drury, 1773, is a common North American skimmer dragonfly. Its range covers southern Canada and all 48 contiguous United States. This is a large dragonfly species, reaching a total length of 50 mm, or 2.0 inches. Each of its wings bears three brown spots. In adult males, extra white spots develop between the existing brown spots, and also at the bases of the hindwings. This species is sometimes alternatively called the ten-spot skimmer, named for the count of these white spots.
