About Leymus arenarius (L.) Hochst.
Leymus arenarius (L.) Hochst. is a sand-loving (psammophilic) grass species in the Poaceae family, native to the coasts of Atlantic and Northern Europe. It is commonly known by several common names: sand ryegrass, sea lyme grass, or simply lyme grass. Its native distribution covers the coasts of northern and western Europe. A closely related species, Leymus mollis, which was previously classified as Elymus arenarius ssp. mollis, is native to the northern coasts of North America. In Europe, the stems of this plant are used for roof thatching, and can also be woven into a coarse fabric. Historically, its seeds were used as food. As early as the 18th century, the plant's extensive root network has been used to stabilize sands on northern coastal beaches. In Iceland, this grass has been harvested as a wild grain since at least the 12th century.
