About Leuenbergeria quisqueyana (Alain) Lodé

Leuenbergeria quisqueyana (Alain) Lodé is a dioecious cactus that grows as a shrub, reaching up to 6 metres (20 ft) in height. Clusters of spines grow in bunches around its trunk. It has bright green, elliptical-shaped succulent leaves. Pink flowers bloom from the ends of its branches, and it produces yellow fruits that contain black seeds. This species is one of only a few cactus species that have leaves. Its natural habitat is Hispaniolan dry forests on the southeastern coast of Hispaniola, occurring especially around the town of Bayahibe, for which it is named. It is classified as critically endangered due to habitat loss.
