About Leucania putrescens Hübner

Technical description and variation: This species, referenced as S. putrescens H. G. (also known as boisduvalii Dup.), can be distinguished from punctosa by its greyer tone and black irroration. It has a black streak from the base below the cell, a round rather than elongated white spot at the lower end of the cell, and black streaks in the terminal interspaces. The larva is reddish ochreous, with pale lines edged in dark, and uninterrupted subdorsal lines. The former subspecies canariensis Rbl. from the Canary Islands is now the full species Leucania canariensis Rebel, 1894; it is smaller, has darker forewings, and a distinct black cellspot on the underside.
