About Leucadendron strobilinum (L.) Druce
Leucadendron strobilinum, commonly known as the peninsula conebush, is a plant species in the genus Leucadendron, which belongs to the Proteaceae family. This species is restricted to the Cape Peninsula of South Africa. It grows on southern-facing, damp rocky slopes at elevations between 500 and 1100 meters, and can reach a maximum height of 2.6 meters, or 8 feet 6 inches. Its conservation status is listed as Near Threatened, due to threats from inappropriate fire management, fire-break clearing, and invasive alien plant species. Like all members of the genus Leucadendron, the peninsula conebush is dioecious. It flowers between September and October, and its flowers have a yeast-like scent. Seeds are stored on female plants, an adaptive trait called serotiny. The seeds are only released after a fire occurs, and they have wings that allow them to be dispersed by wind.
