About Leucadendron pubibracteolatum I.Williams
This species of shrub, scientifically named Leucadendron pubibracteolatum I.Williams, grows to 1.3 meters (4.3 feet) tall. It flowers between July and August. The entire plant dies after a fire, but its seeds survive. Seeds are stored in a cone on the female plant, and fall out of the cone onto the soil two months after the fire. They are then spread by rodents. Leucadendron pubibracteolatum is unisexual, with separate individual plants that produce only male or only female flowers. Small beetles act as pollinators for this species. It grows naturally in the Outeniqua Mountains, Kouga Mountains, Baviaankloof Mountains, Scholtzberg, Swartberg, and Kammanassie Mountains, in the area ranging from George to Joubertina. It grows primarily in rocky, sandy soil at altitudes between 300 and 1,000 meters (980 to 3,280 feet).
