About Leucadendron procerum (Knight) I.Williams
This shrub, scientifically named Leucadendron procerum (Knight) I.Williams, reaches 3 m (9.8 ft) tall and flowers in August. It is killed by fire, but its seeds survive wildfires. The seeds are stored in a cone on female plants; after a fire, the seeds fall to the ground and are spread by wind, as the seeds have wings. The species is unisexual, with separate individual plants that produce either male or female flowers, which are pollinated by insects. This plant has a national registration number of 81.2, and it is called langbeentjie in Afrikaans. It grows across the Bokkeveld Plateau, Gifberg, Cederberg, the Olifants River Mountains, and northern Sandveld. It grows primarily in sand derived from sandstone, at elevations between 300 and 670 m (980–2,200 ft).
