About Leucadendron modestum I.Williams

Scientific name: Leucadendron modestum I.Williams. This shrub grows to 60 cm (24 inches) tall and produces flowers in August. Fire kills the entire plant, but its seeds survive the event. The seeds are stored on the female plant in a cone called a tolbos, and are released after fires; after release, they may spread by wind. This species is unisexual, with separate individual male and female plants. In Afrikaans, it is called skugtertolbos. This plant is found growing on the Elim Plain, from the areas of Stanford and Bredasdorp to Cape Agulhas. It grows primarily on level gravel or clay soils, at elevations ranging from 0 to 165 m (0 to 541 ft) above sea level.
