About Leptosiphon acicularis (Greene) Jeps.
Leptosiphon acicularis (Greene) Jeps. is an annual herb that grows a hairy stem reaching no more than about 15 centimeters tall. Its oppositely arranged leaves are each split into very narrow, bristle-like lobes that grow up to one centimeter long. The tip of the stem holds an inflorescence made of one or more tiny yellow flowers, which are surrounded by many needle-like sepals. This species blooms from April to May. The specific epithet acicularis comes from Latin, and it means "needle-shaped". This plant is endemic to the California Coast Ranges of northern California, ranging from the San Francisco Bay Area northward. It grows below 700 meters (2,300 feet) in chaparral, oak woodland, and coastal prairie habitats. Leptosiphon acicularis is listed as a Vulnerable species by both the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the IUCN, and it is included in the California Native Plant Society Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants.
