Taxonomic Clarification

This species was taxonomically clarified by Heyer W.R. in a 2005 paper titled "Variation and taxonomic clarification of the large species of the Leptodactylus pentadactylus species group (Amphibia: Leptodactylidae) from Middle America, Northern South America, and Amazonia", published in Arquivos de Zoologia, volume 37, pages 269–348.

Habitat Biomes

Adult Leptodactylus vastus are found in the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes, in and around ponds and other bodies of water.

Elevation Range & Protected Habitats

Recorded elevation of the species' observed range falls between 153 and 537 meters above sea level, and populations have been located within protected parks.

Reproduction

For reproduction, this frog constructs a foam nest to hold its eggs on the ground near water, and tadpoles complete their development in water.
