About Leptobasis lucifer (Donnelly, 1967)

Leptobasis lucifer, commonly called the lucifer swampdamsel, is a relatively long, slender species of narrow-winged damselfly in the genus Leptobasis. It is found in Central America, southern Mexico, and occurs locally in Southern Florida. This species favors swampy woodland habitats like cypress swamps, and individuals hunt near trees, scanning and hovering around leaves to search for prey. Males have a green thorax marked with black striping, and a bright red patch near the tip of the abdomen. Females show much more color variation, ranging from dull greenish brown, to blue and reddish orange, to green with a blue ring around the abdomen. Adult females of this species have a large ovipositor. Immature individuals of both sexes have pale blueish coloration in the areas that appear green or greenish in adult damselflies of this species.
