About Lepiota decorata Zeller

Lepiota decorata Zeller, commonly called the pink parasol, is an uncommon species of gilled mushroom that occurs in North America. Its cap typically measures 4 to 8 cm in diameter, displays a speckled violet pattern, and turns orange when scratched. This mushroom often grows in rich soil and leaf litter under trees, including coast live oak, alder, eucalyptus, and conifer. A separate, similar species that has not yet been formally described grows in association with Monterey cypress. Leucoagaricus roseolividus, a far more common mushroom, looks superficially similar to Lepiota decorata. While Lepiota decorata may actually belong to the genus Leucoagaricus, it has not been formally reclassified to this genus. This species was first described by S. M. Zeller in the journal Mycologia in 1929.
