In its natural habitat, this species grows on dead hardwood in climates ranging from subtropical to tropical. In North America, it occurs in the Mountain states and areas further east, and can be found between June and October. This mushroom is edible. As a saprotroph, it is capable of being cultivated. It is known and sometimes collected as food by the Huichol people of Mexico, though the Huichol prefer other less chewy mushroom species instead.
