About Leichhardtia australis R.Br.
Leichhardtia australis R.Br. is an Australian native plant, commonly known by the common names bush banana, silky pear, and green vine. It occurs in Central Australia and across the whole of Western Australia. It is a bush tucker food used by Indigenous Australian peoples. This species has many distinct names in different Aboriginal languages. In the Arrernte language of Central Australia, the whole plant is called merne alangkwe, with an older transcription as elonka; the flowers are called merne ulkantyerrknge; and the prefix merne indicates that the item is plant food, while the main plant food portion is called merne altyeye. In the Karrajari, Nyulnyul, and Yawuru languages, it is called Magabala. The Walmajarri people refer to it as Kurlipi, and its small fruits are called amwerterrpe. The Australian locations Kalgoorlie and its suburb Karlkurla both get their names from a Wangai word that translates to "place of the silky pears".
