About Layia heterotricha (DC.) Hook. & Arn.
Layia heterotricha is an annual herb that grows a thick, erect stem that reaches a maximum height close to 90 centimeters. Its stem and foliage are thinly covered with dark glandular hairs, and the plant gives off a scent similar to apples or bananas. Its leaves are oval-shaped, fleshy, and sometimes slightly toothed. Its flower heads hold white to pale yellow ray florets, each up to 2.5 centimeters long, plus numerous yellow disc florets with yellow anthers. The fruit produced by this species is an achene; achenes that develop from disc florets often have a long pappus. This plant is endemic to California. Within the state, it is found only in a few areas of west-central California, including the Santa Monica Mountains and the lower San Joaquin Valley.
