About Lathyrus hirsutus L.
Lathyrus hirsutus is a species of wild pea that has several common names: Caley pea, singletary pea, hairy vetchling, and Austrian winter pea. It is native to Europe, North Africa, and large parts of Asia, and it has been introduced to other continents including North America. This plant is an annual herb that grows a winged stem. Its leaves are each composed of two leaflike leaflets, plus a branching, coiled tendril. The inflorescence bears one or two pink, blue, or bicolored pea flowers, each 1 to 1.5 centimeters wide. The fruit is a dehiscent legume pod covered in hairs; each individual hair grows from a tiny bulbous base. Most other parts of the plant are generally hairless.
