About Laothoe amurensis Staudinger, 1892
Description: This moth has a wingspan ranging from 71 to 98 mm. It is very similar to Laothoe populi, a common widespread European moth, but it is larger and significantly darker in color. Females lay eggs either singly or in small groups of two to four. Eggs are deposited on the underside of host plant leaves. Distribution: This species occurs in the northern portion of the Palearctic realm. Adults fly in May, and the species can be found only in far-eastern Europe, including parts of Poland, Finland, Ukraine, and Belarus. Its range extends eastward to Japan, where the subspecies Laothoe amurensis sinica occurs. Although the species is very rare, it is not a protected taxon, for example in Poland. Only a small number of known locations exist where this moth can be successfully attracted to light.
