It is native to the Cape Provinces of South Africa. Both the unmodified wild species and multiple cultivars are sold commercially, with available cultivars including 'Tresco Apricot', 'Tresco Brilliant', 'Tresco Fire', 'Tresco Orange', 'Tresco Peach', 'Tresco Pearl', 'Tresco Purple', and 'Tresco Red'.
