About Lampranthus glaucoides (Haw.) N.E.Br.

Lampranthus glaucoides (Haw.) N.E.Br. is a plant species in the genus Lampranthus. It has the synonym Lampranthus aurantiacus, and goes by the common names trailing iceplant (a name shared with other members of the family Aizoaceae) and copper brightfig. It is native to South Africa, and has become naturalized in gardens worldwide. It was first described by Adrian Hardy Haworth in 1795, under the original name Mesembryanthemum glaucoides. The orange color of its petals comes from the betaxanthin compound humilixanthin. When listed under its synonym Lampranthus aurantiacus, this species is included on the Tasmanian Fire Service's list of low flammability plants, which means it is considered suitable for growing within a building protection zone.
