About Lactuca perennis L.
Lactuca perennis L. has an average height of 60 centimetres (24 inches), with a minimum height of 20 centimetres (7.9 inches). This glabrous plant has erect, branched stems, and greyish-green leaves. Lower leaves have small petioles, while upper leaves are partly amplexicaul. It is a hermaphrodite species pollinated by insects. Its flowers are violet-blue and measure 30–40 millimetres (1.2–1.6 in) across. Flowering occurs from April through August, and seeds ripen from July to September. In southern France, this species is sometimes called by its Occitan names, "breou" or "breu". This plant prefers well-drained calcareous soils, and is commonly found in sunny rocky areas, dry meadows, roadsides, and river banks. It grows at altitudes ranging from an average of 500 to 2,000 metres (1,600–6,600 ft) above sea level.
