Lactuca inermis Forssk. is a species of wild lettuce native to sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, and the Arabian Peninsula. It is a pioneer species that is most often found in disturbed areas. This plant has a variable height range, growing from 5 cm (very short) to 240 cm (quite tall), and can develop a woody growth form. Local people eat the plant's young leaves as a salad green or vegetable, often after lightly boiling the leaves first.
