About Lactarius hygrophoroides Berk. & M.A.Curtis

The cap of Lactarius hygrophoroides is initially convex with a central depression, and its margin lifts upward as the mushroom ages. Caps range from 3 to 8 centimetres (1+1โ„4โ€“3+1โ„4 inches) wide, and are pinkish-orange in color, covered in a light frosty bloom that darkens when touched. The gills are adnate, sometimes slightly decurrent, and pale in color. The stem measures 2โ€“5 cm (3โ„4โ€“2 in) long and 7โ€“15 millimetres (1โ„4โ€“5โ„8 in) wide, is often tapered toward the base, and matches the cap's color or is slightly lighter. This species produces a white spore print. Lactarius hygrophoroides grows under oak trees in eastern North America, and can be found between June and September. It is considered potentially a choice edible mushroom, though some sources note its taste is mild.
