About Lachenalia variegata W.F.Barker
Lachenalia variegata W.F.Barker is a bulbous geophyte that reaches 10–45 cm (3.9–17.7 in) in height. It typically produces one lance- or strap-shaped leaf with thickened margins, though rare individuals may grow two leaves. The upper surface of the leaf is plain and marked with longitudinal grooves, while the lower surface features purple marks and splotches. The plant's bulb has a diameter of 1–2 cm (0.39–0.79 in), and its tunic is composed of multiple layers. The outer layers of the tunic are dark brown and spongy, while the inner cataphyll is translucent white and tinged with magenta near the top. Dense racemes of flowers bloom between August and October. The flowers are greenish-grey, marked with darker green, blue, purple, or brown markings, and have white tips. This species is endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, growing in the region between Clanwilliam and the Cape Peninsula. It is most common in coastal areas with deep sand, and grows best in both calcareous and acidic soils.
