About Lachenalia bulbifera (Cirillo) Engl.
Lachenalia bulbifera (Cirillo) Engl., also known by the synonym Lachenalia pendula, is a flowering plant species in the family Asparagaceae. It is native to the Western Cape of South Africa. This is a bulbous perennial that grows 30 cm (12 inches) tall and 5 cm (2 inches) wide. It produces strap-shaped spotted leaves and fleshy stems that hold 3 cm-long pendent tubular orange or red flowers, which bloom in winter and spring. The specific epithet bulbifera means "bulb-bearing" in Latin, and this name refers to the species' habit of producing small bulblets. These bulblets can be separated from the parent plant and grown into new individual plants. Lachenalia bulbifera needs a sheltered, frost-free growing location, or it can be cultivated under glass. Both the species itself and its pink-flowered cultivar 'George' have received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
