About Lacanobia thalassina Hufnagel, 1766
This species, Lacanobia thalassina Hufnagel, 1766, has a wingspan of 35–38 mm, and forewings that measure 16–20 mm in length. It lacks pale grey tints; its base red-brown forewing ground color only varies to dark grey. The club-shaped claviform stigma extends outward as a dark dash to the outer line. The upper stigmata are pale, with partial black outlines. A black basal streak is present, with a pale patch positioned above it. Hindwings are pale fuscous, and paler toward the base. Three forms and aberrations are recorded: the form achates Hbn. has uniformly red-brown forewings; the form humeralis Haw. is fuscous grey with all red tints absent; the aberration nigrifusa nov. [Warren] is entirely suffused with black, with only the orbicular stigma and faint traces of the outer and submarginal lines remaining pale grey. For comparison, the similar species Lacanobia suasa and Lacanobia w-latinum have a wavy W-shaped line that extends all the way to the wing fringes.
