About Lacanobia contigua (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775

Technical description and variation: The wingspan of Lacanobia contigua ranges from 36 to 42 mm. The forewings are pale ash grey, suffused with olive brown. A black streak extends from the base below the cell, with a pale costal blotch positioned above it. The claviform stigma is dark, and it is followed by an ochreous white patch at the base of vein 2. The orbicular stigma is whitish with a grey centre; along with the pale patch beyond the claviform stigma and a large pale blotch on the inner margin beyond the outer line, it forms a sort of oblique pale bar. The lower lobe of the reniform stigma is blackish, and is followed by a fulvous tinge. The submarginal line is strongly dentate, with the teeth on veins 3 and 4 reaching the margin. The hindwings are whitish grey, with darker veins and termen. The form subcontigua Ev. is a dark, heavily suffused individual that lacks the pale patches described; this form was first recorded from the Ural Mountains in Russia, though similar specimens have been found in other regions. The aberration amurensis Spul., from Amurland, has a more delicate wing outline, is reddish grey in colour, and has less distinct markings.
