About Kadenicarpus pseudomacrochele subsp. pseudomacrochele

Kadenicarpus pseudomacrochele subsp. pseudomacrochele most often grows as a single individual. It has light green to darker blue-green bodies shaped like spheres or spherical cylinders, and occasionally produces new sprouts. The plant has a large, fleshy turnip-shaped root, and the tops of its bodies are covered in wool. Fully grown bodies reach 2 to 4 cm (0.79 to 1.57 in) in height, and 2.5 to 3.4 cm (0.98 to 1.34 in) in diameter. Its rounded cusps narrow toward the tip, and measure 3 to 5 mm (0.12 to 0.20 in) in height. This subspecies has 5 to 8 thorns that cannot be distinguished as either marginal or central thorns. The thorns are yellowish-brown, turn gray as they age, are bristle-like and twisted, mostly project outward, and grow 15 to 30 mm (0.59 to 1.18 in) long. Its flowers can be white, reddish purple, yellowish green, or magenta. They measure 2.5 to 3.2 cm (0.98 to 1.26 in) long and 2 to 3.5 cm (0.79 to 1.38 in) in diameter. The plant's green, nearly spherical fruits are 4 to 6 mm (0.16 to 0.24 in) long. This subspecies is endemic to the Mexican states of Hidalgo and Querétaro, and its natural habitat is hot deserts.
