About Juncus ensifolius Wikstr.

Juncus ensifolius Wikstr. is a rush species with common names including swordleaf rush, sword-leaved rush, and three-stamened rush. It is native to most of western North America, ranging from Alaska to central Mexico and extending into eastern Canada. It also occurs naturally in Japan and far eastern Russia, and has been introduced to many other regions across the globe, such as Europe, New Zealand, Hawaii, and Australia. It grows in wet areas across a wide variety of habitat types. This is a rhizomatous perennial herb that grows in clumps of stems that reach 20 to 60 centimeters in height. Its flat, curving leaves are mostly found at the base of the stems, and vary in length. The inflorescence is an arrangement of multiple rounded clusters, each holding many individual flowers. Each flower has several dark brown to black tepals a few millimeters long, and typically three small stamens enclosed within the tepals. The fruit is an oblong capsule that bears a small beak at its tip.
