This species has black bands running along the base of its dorsal fin, as well as black markings on its snout and forehead.
Head and Mouth Morphology
It has a small, protractile mouth, with a black, burglar-like mask marking around its eyes, and brush-like teeth.
Similar Congeners
It is superficially similar to Prognathodes carlhubbsi and Prognathodes falcifer, two other species native to the East Pacific.
Distribution Range
This fish is distributed in the Eastern Pacific, ranging from the Gulf of California to Panama. Its range also includes Cocos Island, Malpelo Island, and the Galápagos Islands, and it has additionally been recorded in Peru.
Habitat and Depth Range
It lives at depths from near the surface down to 40 metres (130 ft), and inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas.
