Iva hayesiana A.Gray is a shrubby perennial herb that grows to nearly 1 meter (40 inches) tall. Its green, oval-shaped leaves are fleshy, glandular, aromatic, and measure 3 to 6 centimeters (1.2 to 2.4 inches) long. The flowers of this species are nearly invisible. Male flowers have translucent corollas and simple yellow stamens, while female flowers, when present, have no corollas at all. This plant grows in mineral-rich water-based habitats, including intermittent streams and alkali flats.
