About Ischnura pruinescens (Tillyard, 1906)

Ischnura pruinescens (Tillyard, 1906), commonly called the colourful bluetail, is a small to medium-sized damselfly with a wingspan of approximately 35 to 50mm. Adult males have a pruinose coating on the synthorax and portions of the abdomen. Females have bright yellow or orange coloration on the synthorax and legs, pale green colouring underneath the abdomen, and blue markings on abdominal segments eight and nine. This species is distributed across Australia and New Guinea. In Australia, it occurs in the north-eastern part of the continent, ranging from the Gold Coast to Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, and extending west into the tropical regions of the Northern Territory. It inhabits freshwater pools, lakes, ponds and swamps.
