About Iris verna L.

Iris verna L. is a small herbaceous perennial flowering plant. It spreads to form colonies via deeply buried underground rhizomes. It blooms in spring, and typically produces inflorescences in shades ranging from light to deep blue or violet; rare white-flowered forms have also been recorded. Its sepals bear a golden yellow signal patch. It can be told apart from the similar-looking Iris cristata, which shares most of Iris verna's range, through several key characteristics. Unlike Iris cristata, Iris verna does not have the crested ridges present on Iris cristata's sepals, and its flowers are strongly fragrant (Iris cristata flowers are not strongly fragrant). Additionally, the leaves of Iris verna are narrower and straighter than the leaves of Iris cristata, and Iris verna has deeply buried rhizomes, while Iris cristata has shallow rhizomes.
