About Iris prismatica Pursh

Iris prismatica Pursh, commonly known as slender blue flag or cubeseed iris, is a plant species native to the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Nova Scotia, and parts of the southern and eastern United States ranging from Maine south to Alabama. This is a perennial herb that spreads via rhizomes growing close to the soil surface. Its flowering stalks can grow up to 80 cm in height. The leaves are long and narrow, reaching up to 60 cm long, but rarely measure more than 5 mm across. It produces 2 to 3 blooms in May, and the flowers are colored pale blue to blue-violet. This species typically grows in swampy, wet conditions. Within the United States, it is currently state-listed as threatened in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Tennessee, and state-listed as endangered in Maryland and Pennsylvania. It is cold hardy to USDA Zone 3.
