About Iris hookeri Penny ex G.Don

Iris hookeri, commonly known as beach head iris, is a species of iris. This species is endemic to sea coasts and beaches in Maine (Northeastern United States) and eastern Canada. It blooms in the month of July. It was first published in 1832 by English botanist George Penny on page 591 of the second edition of Hort. Brit., which was edited by J.C. Loudon, and the publication was based on an earlier description by George Don. Its Latin specific epithet hookeri honors English botanist William Jackson Hooker. In Eastern Canada, it is found in Québec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador. On 4 April 2003, it was verified by the United States Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Research Service, and this name is accepted as valid by the RHS.
