About Indigofera hilaris Eckl. & Zeyh.
Indigofera hilaris Eckl. & Zeyh. is a perennial shrublet that grows erect annual stems up to 60 cm tall from a thick, woody rootstock. Its leaves are pinnate, bearing one to four pairs of narrow elliptical, silky leaflets that are often folded. Basal leaves of this species are reduced and become scaly. Its stipules are 2–9 mm long, linear, and stiff. Its inflorescences are densely flowered, short-stalked racemes that measure 1.5–5 cm long, and are scarcely longer than the plant’s leaves. The flowers range in color from reddish-pink to carmine, are 7–8 mm long, and around 6 mm in diameter. The seed pods are 10–30 mm long, cylindrical, and straight. This species flowers from July to December, with particularly abundant blooming occurring after fires. It grows in open grasslands across eastern South and tropical Africa, found in Tanzania, Zambia, Zaire, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Lesotho, and South Africa (specifically in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, North-West, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and Eastern Cape).
