About Icius hamatus (C.L.Koch, 1846)
Icius hamatus is a species of jumping spider that belongs to the Salticidae family. This species is primarily found in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Poland, Greece, and Romania. Adult individuals of this species reach an approximate body length of 5 to 7 millimeters, or 0.20 to 0.28 inches. Icius hamatus prefers dry, hot xerothermic habitats, and can most often be found on sunny bushes, shrubs, and house walls, as it is a synanthropic organism. In these locations, the spiders actively pursue their prey. Male Icius hamatus have a basic rusty brown hairy body, featuring a white longitudinal stripe and a white line along the edge of the opisthosoma. The prosoma of males is mainly rusty brown, while their pedipalps and legs are whitish. Female Icius hamatus have a basic body color that is mainly brownish or greyish, with darker markings. Like other spiders of this type, Icius hamatus has eight eyes: very large anterior median eyes, with smaller eyes on each side. This species has excellent eyesight, which is very useful for its hunting behavior.
