About Hypolycaena philippus (Fabricius, 1793)
Hypolycaena philippus is a species first described by Fabricius in 1793. Males of this species have a wingspan of 22 to 28 millimeters, while females have a wingspan of 23.5 to 31 millimeters. In warmer regions, adult Hypolycaena philippus are active year-round, with population peaks occurring in November and between March and April. The larvae of this species feed on a wide variety of plant taxa: Clerodendrum glabrum, Ximenia species (including X. afra and X. americana), Deinbollia species (including D. oblongifolia), Vangueria species (including the fruit interior of V. randii), Maytenus senegalensis, Allophylus, Loranthus, Punica granatum, other Clerodendrum species, Coccinia grandis, and Ixora.
