About Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl.

Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl., commonly called the monk's-hood lichen, is a species of foliose lichen belonging to the family Parmeliaceae. It is a common, widespread species found in boreal and temperate forests across the Northern Hemisphere. Its thallus ranges in color from grey to yellowish-green, is loosely attached to its substrate, and grows in large, irregular patches. The lobes of the lichen are hollow, measuring 2โ€“3mm wide. The outer edge of the lobes curves upward, and is frequently covered with white powdery soredia on its underside. The lower surface of the thallus is black and wrinkled, with some brown discoloration near the lobe margins. Black pycnidia are abundant on the upper surface; their presence creates a pepper-like appearance across the thallus surface. Due to its abundance and moderate sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and heavy metals, Hypogymnia physodes is often used in bioindicator and biomonitoring studies to assess air pollution and other environmental conditions.
