About Hypocysta metirius Butler, 1875

Hypocysta metirius, commonly known as the common brown ringlet, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae. It was first described by Butler in 1875. This species is found along the east coast of Australia, specifically in Queensland and New South Wales. Both male and female common brown ringlets have a wingspan of 31 millimeters. Their bodies are brown, with an orange patch that contains an eyespot on the hindwing. The underside of the hindwing has two eyespots, and a silver spot commonly appears between these two eyespots. Hypocysta metirius flies low to the ground and frequently stops to open its wings. This butterfly inhabits tall open forests and the edges of tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate rainforests. In southern New South Wales, it can also be found in coastal heath-woodland.
