About Hypocalymma angustifolium Schauer

Hypocalymma angustifolium (the white myrtle) is an erect, multistemmed shrub that typically reaches a maximum height of 1.5 metres (4 feet 11 inches). Its leaves are linear, triangular in cross-section, channelled on the lower surface, and glabrous. Most leaves are 15โ€“30 mm (0.59โ€“1.18 in) long and 0.8โ€“1.2 mm (0.031โ€“0.047 in) wide. Flowers are arranged singly or in pairs in leaf axils; they are sessile, with short bracts and bracteoles at the base. The sepals are thin and membranous, around 1.5 mm (0.059 in) long. Petals are roughly 8 mm (0.31 in) across, ranging in colour from white to cream, or occasionally pink. They are egg-shaped, with the narrower end at the base, and measure 3.0โ€“3.5 mm (0.12โ€“0.14 in) long. There are usually 25 to 35 stamens, with filaments joined at the base that are roughly the same length as the petals. Flowering occurs between June and October, and the fruit is a capsule 4โ€“5 mm (0.16โ€“0.20 in) in diameter.

This species is widespread between Eneabba and Ravensthorpe, and inland to Manmanning and Wagin, in the Avon Wheatbelt, Esperance Plains, Geraldton Sandplains, Jarrah Forest, Swan Coastal Plain and Warren bioregions of south-western Australia. It grows in sandy soil, often in somewhat swampy locations.

In horticulture, Hypocalymma angustifolium can be maintained as a well-rounded bush in cultivation, and is suitable for growing in containers. It requires good drainage, prefers a position in partial shade that is protected from heat and wind, and has a degree of frost resistance. Its flowering stems may be cut for use in floral arrangements.
