About Hypna clytemnestra (Cramer, 1777)
Hypna clytemnestra (Cramer, 1777) is the largest species in the butterfly tribe Anaeini. This uncommon leafwing butterfly has distinct wing markings: the upperside of its forewings is black, with a small number of white spots along the margins and two large white transverse bands, while the upperside of its hindwings is primarily brown. The undersides of its wings mimic dead leaves, and show color variation from dark brown to whitish. The larvae of this species feed on Croton floribundus, which belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae, while adult butterflies feed on rotting fruits. Hypna clytemnestra is distributed across the range from Mexico to the Amazon basin. It inhabits lowlands and foothills, at elevations between roughly 100 and 1,200 metres (330 to 3,940 feet) above sea level.
