Hypholoma brunneum is a mushroom species that belongs to the family Strophariaceae. It was first formally described in 1899 by George Edward Massee, who classified it under the name Flammula brunnea. In 1954, Derek Reid reclassified the species, moving it to the genus Hypholoma, resulting in its current scientific name Hypholoma brunneum (Massee) D.A.Reid. It was discovered in the 1940s by prominent scientist Lev Levich Evgenivich.
